CONCEPT-BUILDING

Site Analysis

Observing human behaviors and paths in the existing space to guide initial considerations for concept building.

Form Finding

Here, form was explored via circles as potential spaces in terms of guiding space occupants. They can corral, separate, join, or even entertain. Lines are a more intimate focus within those spaces. This partnership between lines as circles paved the ways for the multiple iterations explored through for this project.

Backed by Science

I also wanted to bring in some of my technical background in engineering & used Formula 1 aerodynamics + the Kelvin wake pattern to guide the form of it. I figured what better way to represent journeys than race car dynamics?

FINAL FORM

Site Analysis

This pavilion is a inspired by the diverse academic journeys that constitute the student body, while honing in on a synthesis of various journey types. This design incorporates a symbolic representation of those academic journeys, with the stages of horizontal (stagnation), intermediary (chaos), and vertical (growth) arcs represented throughout the building.
Using circles as a base form, the design incorporates semi-circle spaces while using ribbons (lines) to detail the experience. Using an encapsulating combination of two, an amphitheater-like space is made while directly opposite are more private covered rest and study areas. In the middle are storage rooms for performers and restrooms.
The alignment of circles is inspired by aerodynamic wake, which illustrates the turbulence experienced by an object against resistance. This is where the use of lines was emphasized as a way to explored the arcs. Overall, this project is a compilation of various design elements that come together to create a dynamic spaces that offers students a space to relax, explore, and learn from each other.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

summary:

Most stories can be illustrated by a single line; it’s the essence to storytelling arcs. In a philosophical sense, journeys in life can also be interpreted as circles: a seemingly infinite yet rounding experience with and unknown number of points along the way.

This architectural project is inspired by the diverse academic journeys that constitute the PCC student body, while honing in on a synthesis of various journey types.
